🍂 Eldamar’s Hidden Sanctuary 🍁

They say there are places in the world where the veil between our reality and ancient realms wears as thin as a thread of silk. It is told that, in a now-distant autumn of 2021, as we ventured into the dense forests of Plitvice, the mist did more than blanket the landscape: it enfolded us in a whisper of forgotten times.

As though Elrond himself or the sages of the First Days had cast a veil of mystery over this quiet corner, the great waterfall unveiled itself through the haze as the true Eldamar’s Hidden Sanctuary. In this haven, where time seems to stand still, the waters flow with eternal calm, guarded by trees cloaked in gold and ochre to celebrate the day’s fading light.

It takes little imagination to picture the Firstborn walking in silence along the natural boardwalks, hidden from the hurried eyes of the world, seeking peace in the steady murmur of the water and the embrace of the fog. For those of us who know how to truly see, this is not merely a Croatian landscape; it is a gateway, a sanctuary where the magic of Middle-earth still breathes in every golden leaf.

🍂 Roots of Yggdrasil 🍁

🇬🇧 Beneath the still waters of the Lyngen Alps lie submerged timbers evoking the roots of Yggdrasil, anchored in the lake’s cold gloom while the world above burns in its final gold before the snows. The Arctic autumn bleeds into the amber birch forest like an offering to the coming winter. From the depths, those weathered boughs carve a path toward the realms of rock and ice towering over the shore—frost giants biding their time across the crags, held in a fragile truce where cold and time stand suspended.

🍂 The Midas Mirror 🍁
.
Last fall, the compass was set firmly on Croatia and Slovenia. While we ate up most of the miles across those two countries—skirting Austrian roads and even making an improvised, almost ghost-like run into Bosnia without quite realizing when we crossed the border—the map held an essential first stop.
.
We had to detour toward the eastern edge of the Julian Alps, right on the Italian-Slovenian border: a wild enclave ablaze with ochres and golds, far removed from the usual crowds of northern Italy. The destination was Laghi di Fusine.
.
We arrived in the late afternoon, set up the camper van under the shelter of the trees, and called it a night. Come morning, beneath an overcast sky that gifted us perfectly soft, diffused light, the stillness of the water did the rest. One of those days on the road where autumn doesn’t ask for permission to steal the entire show.

How many times have you seen aurora photos that look like a blurry green smudge or have out-of-focus stars? 🌌

Capturing the Northern Lights isn’t just about luck or dialing in a 20-second exposure because “it’s dark out.” Most ruined shots come down to two common mistakes: blindly trusting the infinity symbol (∞) on your lens and failing to match your shutter speed to how fast the curtains are dancing.

September is here, the Arctic skies are finally dark again, and aurora season is officially underway. I’ve just published a complete field guide on the website: “Photographing the Northern Lights: 7 Keys to Capturing the Green Fire”.
Inside the article, I break down:

* Why the white luminance histogram lies to you (and how reading the green channel saves your highlights).
* Shutter speed vs. movement: avoiding the dreaded “pea soup” effect.
* Real-time telemetry: why monitoring the Bz value matters before heading out into the cold.
* Thermal shock: protecting your sensor and glass from condensation when heading indoors.

🌫️ Niflheim’s Breath 💜

I had spent years admiring the iconic silhouette of La Meije from afar, waiting for the right moment to experience it face-to-face. With no rain in the forecast, I packed my backpack, tent, and sleeping bag and headed up the ridge; little did I know what was waiting for me. With a damaged tent and sudden foul weather, I found myself stranded mid-mountain under one of the fiercest alpine storms I’ve ever weathered, with the summit entirely swallowed by dark clouds as sunset approached.
Fortunately, a disused cable car structure nearby offered refuge while the gale battered the slopes. When the storm finally blew through as quickly as it had arrived, the sky broke open to reveal this breathtaking scene. The soaked granite and rising cold mist felt like the very breath of Niflheim, the primordial realm of ice and mist. It left me in complete awe, spending the next hour wandering and shooting without a single thought in mind.

🌿 Chasm of Emerald 💚
Deep within the shadowed limestone veins of the Pyrenees lies a sanctuary guarded by time itself—a hidden gorge where mountain streams whisper secrets older than memory.
Pyrenean mythology speaks of the Encantarias, mythical water spirits who dwell in the deepest, most inaccessible pools of the Aragonese riverbeds. According to local lore, these ethereal maidens would emerge at dawn beneath the sheer rock walls, combing their hair with golden combs while guarding the purity of the mountains’ lifeblood. It was said that wherever their gaze lingered or their teardrops touched the swirling currents, the water was forever blessed, glowing with an otherworldly, luminous emerald hue.
To stand at the threshold of this canyon is to step into a realm that refuses to be conquered by maps. Its location remains a quiet secret, known only to the mountain winds, the patient stone, and those few who learn to read the wild paths. Here, as the rushing cascade plunges into the deep basin below, the harsh sunlight softens into a golden aura, illuminating a delicate balance between untamed force and quiet stillness.
The spirits may have faded into legends, but their sanctuary endures—carved in rock, shrouded in mist, and hidden in plain sight.

🌊 The Spire of Time ⏳

🇺🇸 Asturias isn’t typically known for clear sunrises or sunsets; around here, overcast skies and stormy weather are the norm. But when everything lines up and the sun breaks through the horizon, it gives you some incredible colors.
Getting down to the base of the Peñón de Frexulfe (Navia) isn’t exactly a walk in the park. I know plenty of people who won’t even risk heading down, though if you take your time and watch your step, you can make it fine. Being down there at first light, watching the sunrise while the waves crash around your feet and soak both you and your gear—that’s the kind of experience money can’t buy.

🇪🇸 The Sundered Throne 🌩️⛰️

High in the mountains, the weather dictates the rules. During this session facing the imposing face of La Meije, the conditions were harsh and the storm seemed relentless. However, patience in landscape photography always pays off. In a fleeting instant, the clouds parted just enough for a warm, golden light to break through the dense darkness, striking the peak directly. The mountain emerged majestically, revealing itself as a true throne of rock and ice above a raging sea of clouds. If you zoom in, you can spot three solitary birds flying on the left. A small, subtle detail that puts everything into perspective and reminds us of the massive, wild, and overwhelming scale of the Alps. 🦅

Gleipnir’s Fall: Light and Shadow in Chamonix 🐺🔥

Gleipnir’s Fall: Light and Shadow in Chamonix 🐺🔥

🇺🇸 According to Norse mythology, the gods feared the untamed power of the giant wolf Fenrir so much that they decided to bind him. To do so, they forged Gleipnir, a magical fetter as fine as a silk ribbon, yet impossible to break. Prophecy warned that on the day this tether gave way—the day of Gleipnir’s fall—the sky would tear open in flames, the mountains would tremble, and nature would reclaim its sovereign power.
This photograph captures that exact mythical instant in the heart of Chamonix. As dusk falls over Lac Blanc, the intense crimson radiance of the alpenglow resembles the fire of Fenrir himself breaking free after centuries of captivity. The sharp spires of the Mont-Blanc massif rise toward the clouds like unleashed fangs splintering the sky, while the perfectly still mirror of the water reflects the precise moment the mountain breaks its chains to reveal its most epic and untamed beauty.

💙 Azure Metropolis 🏙️

The Awakening City 🏙️✨

🌆 Veins of the Metropolis

-————————

🇺🇸 This photo has a story of its own. Every single time I’ve visited New York City, I’ve tried to capture this exact shot, but I never walked away happy with it. The conditions weren’t what I had envisioned, or honestly, I just didn’t like them. Four previous trips and nothing to show for it; sure, I took some photos, but they’re just sitting there, forgotten in folders on a hard drive.

But it seems like luck was on my side this year. I loved what I was seeing, and I knew that this time, I could get a shot that would actually make me want to sit down and edit. And that’s exactly what happened. I set up my tripod—enduring the grunts of the person accompanying me—and started playing around with the subway lines passing behind me (which made the bridge vibrate) and the flow of traffic, thanks to a traffic light that stopped the cars at just the right moment.

And here is the result

Urban Solitude 🌌

🇺🇸 IIn Japan, there is a concept called Yōgen (幽玄), which speaks to the beauty of the subtle—of that which is merely hinted at in the shadows.

When the hustle and bustle of the day fades away, the backstreets of Japanese cities transform into a stage of pure contrasts. It’s the exact moment when the golden warmth of a small neighborhood joint clashes head-on with the cold glow of futuristic neon lights climbing into the sky. 🏮

Walking during those hours is an almost meditative experience. The silence becomes so thick that you can hear your own footsteps, turning you into an invisible observer in a city suspended in time. 👤

This shot is that exact moment: a brief respite of introspection and calm amidst the urban landscape. A solitary silhouette crossing the intersection between tradition and modernity.

Lower Edge 🚁✨

Glassy echoes of Mt. Fuji 🗻✨

🌲 Spirits of the Cedars: Okunoin After Dark 🌲

🇺🇸 My first time at Okunoin cemetery in Mount Koya was a trip of pure contrasts.
During the day, the path was bustling with pilgrims and travelers. But as soon as night fell, the place completely transformed, and we had it entirely to ourselves. It was just the two of us, surrounded by giant cedar trees and guided only by the warm, golden glow of the stone lanterns.
The silence was so deep you could almost touch it. That’s when you really get why this forest is so sacred. Legend has it that Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, didn’t actually pass away. Instead, he rests here in a state of eternal meditation, waiting for the Future Buddha. That’s why thousands of people have chosen this spot as their final resting place, hoping to awaken right by his side.
Walking this path after dark isn’t spooky at all—honestly, it just brings you this incredible, almost mystical sense of peace. ✨

🎋 Arashiyama Classic ✨
Is it worth pulling an all-nighter just to experience a single moment? 🎋✨
That wasn’t the original plan. We spent the entire night wandering the streets of Kyoto, completely captivated by the magic of night photography: narrow alleys lit by dim lanterns, temples in absolute silence... We lost track of time so completely that we decided to just push through and head straight to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.
We got there while it was still pitch black. We were exhausted and surrounded by darkness, but then, dawn started to break. The first rays of sunlight timidly filtered through the giant green stalks, and the soft whisper of the wind snapped us right awake.
And right then, in the middle of that emerald vastness with not a single tourist in sight, this solitary figure appeared, walking at a slow pace. Her red kimono and purple umbrella created an unreal contrast against the raw nature of the forest. All our exhaustion vanished instantly; it felt like we had traveled centuries back in time, straight to the heart of imperial Japan.
If you’re passionate about photography or just want to see this corner of Japan without the crowds, the secret is waking up super early (or just not sleeping at all, like us 😅).
Have you ever sacrificed your sleep on a trip just to get THAT shot or live a once-in-a-lifetime moment? Let me know in the comments! 👇🇯🇵

🏮 Walking Night in Magome 🌃
One of the places we were most excited to explore on our first trip to Japan was the Kiso Valley, where the historic Nakasendo trail runs. 🇯🇵🌲
We wanted to discover rural and traditional Japan, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities like Osaka or Tokyo, which we would visit later. That’s why we decided to spend a few days in the area to take our time exploring magical towns like Magome, Tsumago, and Narai.
Magome is actually where we bought the traditional outfit in the photo. The funny story of the day came from the sweet lady who sold it to us: she tried so hard to explain that the parasol wasn’t made for the rain, while we did our best to make her understand that we just wanted it for taking pictures. 😅👘🌂
But the most incredible part of all was that, before we knew it, night had fallen and there was absolutely no one left in town. We got to wander its cobblestone streets completely alone, soaking in the silence and peacefully taking the photos we had envisioned. 📸✨

Lady Kyoto 🏮🌸

A spring night falls over Kyoto, and with it, an ancient silence awakens in the cobblestone alleys of Higashiyama. The Yasaka-no-to Pagoda, a centuries-old dark wooden sentinel, rises majestically beneath a deep, almost electric blue sky. But it’s the cherry blossoms, the sakura, which, like pink-tinted clouds under the warm lights, soften the darkness and herald the transience of beauty, the mono no aware.

A figure, adorned in a dazzling red furisode, moves forward with the grace of a Maiko in training. She doesn’t carry just a simple umbrella; her purple bamboo and paper wagasa is a testament to traditional Japanese craftsmanship, an elegant shield against the dampness of the night. She adjusts her silk obi, each fold a secret passed down from generation to generation. She isn’t just walking; she is tradition itself, alive and breathing among wooden machiya townhouses and lanterns flickering with stories of geiko and samurai.

Where is she headed? Perhaps to a performance in the hanamachi, perhaps to an encounter only the Kyoto night knows about. But for this moment, she is in perfect harmony with her surroundings, a silk flower among real cherry blossoms, reminding us that in this city, the past has never truly left.
